Oral Microbiome Testing
What Is Oral Microbiome Testing?
Oral microbiome testing is a saliva based test that evaluates the bacterial balance in your mouth. It helps identify harmful pathogens, cavity related bacteria, and signs of dysbiosis that may be contributing to gum inflammation, bad breath, periodontal disease, and broader oral systemic concerns.
Rather than taking a one size fits all approach, this testing allows us to look more closely at your individual bacterial patterns and build a treatment plan that is more personalized and targeted to your needs.
For many patients, this can provide helpful insight into why inflammation persists, why cavities keep recurring, or why traditional care alone may not be enough.
The Oral Systemic Connection
What happens in the mouth does not always stay in the mouth. The oral microbiome is closely connected to inflammation throughout the body, which is why imbalances in the mouth may have implications far beyond bleeding gums or bad breath.
Research continues to show associations between periodontal disease, chronic inflammation, and broader health concerns including cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and cognitive decline. While the mouth is only one piece of the puzzle, it can be an important place to start when looking at overall health more comprehensively.
This is one reason we take oral bacterial patterns seriously. When harmful pathogens and inflammation are present, we want to identify them early and create a plan that supports both oral health and overall wellness.
How Oral Bacteria May Influence Whole Body Health
Cardiovascular Health
Chronic gum inflammation and harmful oral bacteria have been associated with higher cardiovascular risk. When the gums are inflamed, bacteria and inflammatory byproducts may enter the bloodstream and contribute to systemic inflammation. This is why oral health is increasingly being discussed as part of a broader heart health conversation.
Diabetes and Blood Sugar Balance
The relationship between gum disease and diabetes goes both ways. Patients with diabetes are more prone to periodontal disease, and periodontal inflammation may also make blood sugar regulation more difficult. This is one reason oral health can be an important part of a more complete metabolic health plan.
Brain Health and Cognitive Decline
Emerging research continues to explore the connection between poor oral health, chronic inflammation, and dementia related risk. Although this does not prove a direct cause and effect relationship, it does highlight the importance of reducing chronic inflammation and supporting oral health throughout life.
We do not present oral microbiome testing as a diagnosis for medical disease, but as an important tool that may help identify patterns of oral inflammation and bacterial burden that deserve attention.
Why Patients Choose This Test
Bleeding Gums
Persistent inflammation can be a sign of deeper bacterial imbalance.
Bad Breath
Certain oral bacteria are strongly associated with chronic odor and dysbiosis.
Recurrent Cavities
Cavity causing bacteria such as Strep mutans may increase risk even with routine brushing.
Periodontal Concerns
Testing can reveal pathogens commonly associated with gum disease and tissue breakdown.
Whole Body Health Focus
Many patients want to better understand the possible link between oral inflammation and overall wellness.

Treatment Options Based on Results
Treatment is based on your test results, clinical findings, and overall goals. Depending on the level of dysbiosis or pathogen burden, recommendations may include targeted home care, ozone therapy, oral probiotics, xylitol support, periodontal therapy, antibiotic therapy when appropriate, and retesting to evaluate progress.
Home care changes, oral probiotics, xylitol support, ozone therapy or ozone debridement, hygiene or periodontal therapy, antibiotic therapy when appropriate, and follow up retesting may all be part of a personalized treatment plan.
